If you have a manuscript that is almost ready to go, you might want to enter The Bath Novel Award.  It is for novels in any genre, but must be written for either adult or young adult (13+) readers.  The closing date is 31st March 2015, so you don’t have long!

If you are writing for children you might like to consider The Bath Children’s Novel Award.  The entry details won’t be published until April, but you have plenty of time to prepare as the closing date is 11th October 2015.

There is also a new Bath Flash Fiction Award.  This is a rolling competition and will be judged when it has received 1,000 entries, then start again.  First prize is £1,000.

The Booktrust site has a list of short story competitions that is regularly updated.

If you are interested in writing for the stage, The Bruntwood Prize for Playwriting 2015 is now open with a closing date of 5 June 2015.

Christopher Fielden has put a long list of book and novel writing competitions on his web site.  Well worth a browse through.

Flash 500 run three competitions.  Two of these are run quarterly with the next closing date being 31st March: the Flash Fiction competition is for stories of up to 500 words (excluding the title); the Humour Verse competition is for any form of humour verse.  In addition they have an annual Novel Opening Chapter and Synopsis competition that runs from May to October.

You’ve not got long if you want to enter The Fresher Writing Prize 2015 as the closing date is 8th March 2015. There are categories for Short Story, Creative Non-Fiction, Script Writing (for the stage) and Poetry.

Do you write for the stage? Amateur playwrights are invited to submit unpublished one-act plays for the 11th Windsor Fringe Kenneth Branagh Drama Writing Award. Deadline for submissions is 5th March 2015.

Not a writing competition as such, but Puffin are running a competition to win a writer’s retreat – perfect for getting those dissertations tidied up!

Another competition with a closing date of 31st March 2015 is The Short Ficton 7th Annual Short Story Competition.  A £10 entry fee entitles you to submit two stories and to receive a free copy of the next issue of Short FICTION.

Winchester Writers’ Festival has ten competitions in a range of categories.  Deadline for submissions is 15 May 2015.

In the April edition of Writing Magazine, pages 51-67 are dedicated to Creative Writing competitions running between April and December.  Some of them are already on this page, but I REFUSE to type out the rest.  Either buy a copy of the magazine, get an on-line subscription, or go down to the journals section of the library and take a look for yourself!
