Kath Whiting

I’m primarily a prose person; a magical realist romantic.  I write messily on shiny paper with a specific pen; I like my materials to flow when I do. Except for poetry.  I have to be in a particular mood to write poetry and then I favour collaging lines together on a laptop, more Jenga than Zen.  Favourite writers question is a floodgate; my first breath exhales Haruki Murakami, Jon McGregor, JK Rowling, Philip Pullman and the late great Iain Banks. My writing soundtrack is train noise.  I love writing on trains; sometimes I get on one just to write. My first book love affair was CS Lewis’s The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.  I read it aloud with my Mum over several bedtimes and then I read it to myself on a beach in one sitting.  There weren’t any sandcastles built that day.  That was also probably when my guilty pleasure of rereading began … and my habit of climbing into wardrobes.  I’m definitely a dog person; enthusiastic, waggy and eager to please.  But I don’t eat my own vomit.
